Comparison

DiscoLike vs Claygent

Claygent is Clay's AI research agent. DiscoGen is DiscoLike's. Both run one prompt per company and write a structured column. They differ on what the model gets to read, whether you can pick the search provider, and who pays for the orchestration.

TL;DR

Claygent, by default, hands the model one thing: the company URL. That is very little to reason from, and the model often confuses one company with another. Getting more context means building extra columns at extra cost, and homepage text, the single most useful input for ICP fit checks, is not available at all without a separate scraping API you script yourself.

DiscoGen appends the full firmographic profile and the complete homepage text to every prompt at no extra cost. The model is anchored on what the company actually says about itself, which is what accurate ICP fit identification needs.

Claygent runs on Clay's internal search and Clay's models; premium external models add an overhead charge, and the search side cannot be changed. DiscoGen lets you bring your own search provider. We recommend Serper, which provides Google Search, still the best search engine by far, and pairing it with the best model for the task: GPT Luna for business knowledge or Gemini for maps questions. Orchestration is free on every DiscoLike plan.

Claygent details verified August 28, 2026 from public pricing pages, documentation, and independent reviews. Spotted something outdated? and we'll fix it.

1. Context: a URL versus the whole company

Claygent's default input is the company URL. A URL gives the model almost nothing to reason from, so it guesses, and it regularly confuses companies with similar names or domains. The fix inside Clay is to build additional columns that pass more context, and every one of those columns costs actions and credits. The input that matters most for ICP fit validation, the homepage text, is not available in Clay at all; you have to script it separately against a scraping API.

DiscoGen appends the full firmographic profile to every prompt at no additional cost: name, domain, contact information, address, top keywords and business categories, summary, and the entire homepage text. That is the best possible context anchoring for an LLM. Models identify companies by correlating several signals, not by matching a single string, and the homepage text alone carries enough information for accurate ICP fit identification. Each company gets its own isolated context window sized to the model's memory, so nothing gets overwritten mid-run.

DiscoGen can also switch open-web search off, so the model answers only from company-reported data. No exclusion prompting, no outside pages distorting the answer.

DiscoGen ships the whole company with every prompt. Claygent ships the URL and charges you to add the rest.

2. Search: bring your own provider

Claygent runs on Clay's internal search. You cannot swap it, tune it, or see what queries it ran, and the cost of every search is baked into the per-action price. Premium external models are available but carry an overhead charge on top.

DiscoGen lets you bring your own search provider. We recommend Serper, which provides Google Search, still the best search engine by far, and pairing it with the best model for the task: GPT Luna for business knowledge or Gemini for maps questions. You see exactly what was queried. Tavily, Perplexity, Brave, and SearXNG work too. We orchestrate the calls; the bill goes to the provider at list price, no markup.

The search provider is where most of the cost and most of the quality lives. Clay locks it. DiscoGen hands you the key.

3. Models: best of breed per task, not one bundled model

With the search and the model unbundled, you combine the best search with the best model for each job: Serper for Google Search results, GPT Luna for business knowledge, Gemini for maps questions. Any major LLM provider works on your own key, and if you want full control we'll help you connect models on your own GPUs.

In Clay the model and the search come as one bundle priced per action. You can pick a premium model and pay the overhead, but the search behind it stays Clay's.

One agent, one bundled model, pay per action, is how this category worked three years ago. DiscoGen is max context, free orchestration, and your choice of LLM and search provider.

What a thousand rows actually costs

Clay's published plans (clay.com/pricing, August 2026) include Claygent on every tier: Free at 500 actions and 100 data credits a month, Launch from $167/mo with 15,000 actions and 3,000 data credits, Growth from $446/mo, Enterprise custom. Each AI prompt is 1 action, advanced reasoning models draw variable data credits, and any extra context column is more of both. Clay does not publish a per-run Claygent rate.

DiscoGen's math has one line: the provider's own bill. $3–6 per 1,000 records with top-tier models, $1–2 with the best older models, homepage text and firmographics included at zero. The DiscoLike subscription ($99–$1,599/mo, see pricing) converts entirely to search credits and is never drawn down by research columns. The full argument is in Free Claygent Alternative with BYOK.

Where Claygent genuinely wins

Claygent lives where the workflow lives. If your team's operating system is a Clay table, an agent sitting next to the waterfalls, the Sequencer, document and PDF reading, and your CRM syncs is the convenient default, and there is a free plan to start on. DiscoLike integrates with Clay so you don't have to choose: build the list and run the bulk research columns in DiscoLike with full context, then push the results into Clay for the steps that follow.

Fit

Which one is right for you?

Choose DiscoLike if

  • You want the model anchored on full firmographics and the homepage text, not a URL
  • You want to choose the search provider (Serper) and the model per task, and pay list price for both
  • ICP fit validation is the point of the research column and company mix-ups are costing you
  • You need scope control: open-web search off, answers only from company-reported data
  • You run the agent from Claude Code, n8n, or an API workflow that has no research agent of its own

Choose Claygent if

  • Your entire workflow already runs inside Clay tables and you want the agent next to your waterfalls and Sequencer
  • You need document and PDF reading or CRM and data warehouse context in the same agent run
  • You're starting on Clay's free plan and 500 actions a month covers you
  • Per-action simplicity matters more to you than controlling context, model, and search

FAQ

Common questions

Is DiscoGen a replacement for Claygent?

For research columns, yes: DiscoGen runs any prompt per company with the full firmographic profile and homepage text as context, from the DiscoLike web app, REST API, or MCP. For everything else Clay does around the agent (waterfalls, Sequencer, CRM syncs), no. Many teams run bulk research on DiscoGen and keep Clay for orchestration.

Why does Claygent confuse companies?

Because its default input is only the company URL. With one signal the model has to guess, and similar names or domains get mixed up. DiscoGen sends name, domain, address, keywords, categories, summary, and the full homepage text, so the model correlates several signals before it answers.

Which search provider should I use with DiscoGen?

Serper is our recommendation: best price-performance and transparent queries. Tavily, Perplexity, Brave, and SearXNG also work. Bring the key and we pass the calls through at list price. Clay's search is internal and cannot be swapped.

How is DiscoGen free if Claygent charges per action?

The orchestration layer is free on every DiscoLike plan. You pay the model and the search provider directly through your own keys. Claygent bundles model, search, and orchestration into one per-action price. Orchestration is the cheap part, so we don't charge for it.

Do I need Clay to use DiscoGen?

No. DiscoGen runs standalone through the DiscoLike web app, REST API, and MCP server, so you can use it from Claude Code, n8n, or any HTTP tool. If you do use Clay, DiscoLike integrates with it; the common pattern is DiscoGen for the heavy research columns and Clay for what follows.
